Environmental weavers

Arauca - Arauquita

Description of Social Entrepreneurship

Elderly women and mothers head of the Aguachica village in the Arauquita municipality, make handbags, accessories such as earrings and hats with reused plastic bags, which are cut and then woven in crochet technique.

What led you to create your Social Entrepreneurship?

I met these products through a gift they gave me, a bag woven by Mrs. Dolly Rivera (leader of the initiative) and I set out to make this woman’s talent known. The contribution made to the environment by reusing bags and creating sustainable products is very significant, thus allowing to reduce the pollution caused by the plastic bag as waste.

How does your Social Entrepreneurship impact your community?

Our entrepreneurship has a significant impact on the income of the women who weave, since Maraka buys her products, some have seen a job in this art, since before they were only housewives, in this way they have been able to improve the economy of the home. Maraka supports the promotion, commercialization, highlighting and making visible the women of the Vereda de Agua-chica. They also benefit from their mental health because they have to be entertained, which they didn’t have to do before, because this path is scarce of opportunities for the elderly population, on the other hand, women burned plastic bags, now They became aware of the importance of reusing it.

What do you dream of happening with your Social Entrepreneurship?

That the art of weaving in a plastic bag be replicated, that more people are benefited in their income and in their health by the benefit that weaves the brain. That we reduce the pollution produced by the plastic bag if it is not reused.
