Agave and Mulie

Norte de Santander - Ocaña

Description of Social Entrepreneurship

Ágave & Mulié promotes Colombian cultural traditions through the production and commercialization of hand-woven products, based on natural fibers. Our venture began with the desire to revive, together with the community and especially women, the tradition of processing and transformation of the fique in the town of Pueblo Nuevo, Ocaña, Norte de Santander.

What led you to create your Social Entrepreneurship?

Pueblo Nuevo is a municipality in the municipality of Ocaña, department Norte de Santander, Catatumbo region, located in the Eastern Cordillera at approximately 1,700 meters above sea level. The families of Pueblo Nuevo and especially women have traditionally worked with the fique, a plant from which a fiber is extracted, which is processed in several steps for the elaboration of a final product. For the People’s community, this process means a valuable and important tradition, which they want to maintain and transmit to future generations. This tradition was interrupted by different circumstances, such as the armed conflict in the area and the use of other packaging materials. The desire to revive this tradition in the town, promote it and make it visible led us to create Ágave & Mulié.

How does your Social Entrepreneurship impact your community?

Ágave & Mulié promoted the renewal of the tradition of processing and transformation of the fique in Pueblo Nuevo, which generates greater economic income for the community, especially women who dedicate themselves to fiber weaving. Additionally, this tradition allows the work to be carried out as a family because men also help in some stages of the process, such as the scaring that consists of combing the fiber to make it tame to be woven. This allows the work to be shared and even couples and families benefit financially from this tradition. Entrepreneurship aims to ensure that the community has greater economic benefits but at the same time that the social fabric is strengthened, through community and family work.

What do you dream of happening with your Social Entrepreneurship?

We dream of making Pueblo Nuevo, its working community and the tradition of the fique known through the commercialization of our products nationally and internationally. We dream of mixing traditions in an innovative way in our products, to show the cultural wealth of the country. We dream of positively impacting the environment by marketing products made from renewable natural elements that do not contaminate or have a negative impact. We dream of being a reference in Colombia of a social enterprise committed to the sustainable development of communities, respecting their traditions, their knowledge and their culture.
